The LOGO Process
Principles of a Good Logo
Memorability: A strong logo is easily and quickly remembered.
Versatility: Retains impact and legibility while working well across all platforms and sizes
Timelessness: Stays effective and relevant despite ever-changing design trends.
Appropriateness: Matches the brand’s industry, target audience, identity, and mission.
Simplicity: Fully conveys a clear brand message as simply as possible.
Creating logos is one of my very favorite design exercises. Each one is its own challenge with a unique style and personality. Just as the final product should be simple, so is my approach in creating it.
Research
You can’t solve a puzzle without all of the pieces.
So research starts with a client interview, then moves into discovering their history, competitors, audience, services, products, and business goals.
Concepting
I begin concepting by sketching all of the possible elements onto a page; the name, the subtitle, any relevant imagery. This becomes my toybox from which I can piece together a full idea. I look for combination possibilities in the similar curves and lines of the various elements. Every little detail within a logo should have a purpose. After several rounds of sketching and a variety of ideas, I bring the best ideas to life. Usually logos concepts undergo multiple rounds of modification until the client’s vision and my ideas align.
Finalizing
Before all of the brand guides and pretty lockups can be completed, I run the logo back through the lens from which it was created; making sure it still aligns with the client’s history, competitors, audience, services, products, and business goals.
